Brutal Honesty -or- NVC -or- Talking Nice?
Do you prefer: - Speech that protects feelings, at the expense of authenticity; - Truth delivered with compassion; or - Blunt truth that may incorporate judgement, diagnoses, evaluation, blame, guilt, or shame?

"Language of Compassionate Responsibility" or "Nonviolent Communication" or "Compassionate Communication" has the following: POTENTIAL POSITIVES: - More freedom - Increased connection - Practice of authenticity - Easier to practice because "I know me" - Increased trust - Increased respect - Increased understanding of self and others POTENTIAL NEGATIVES: - Immediate conflict - Hurt feelings | | "Talking Nice" has the following: POTENTIAL POSITIVES: - Temporary peace - Temporary comfort - Potential efficiency* POTENTIAL NEGATIVES: - Guilt - Trust loss - Energy/time cost from the sacrifice - Harder because we don't read minds - Decreased respect - Resentment *There may be efficiency in using less words. However, the shallow nature of this type of communication undercuts efficiency in the long term because underlying issues are ignored. |
